Sri Lanka shone as a beacon of warmth and impeccable organisation at the start of September 2025, as it successfully hosted the International Convention of Jehovah's Witnesses. The capital, Colombo, welcomed a huge gathering, not only for a three-day spiritual program but also for an unforgettable tour of the island's natural and historical treasures.

From September 5th to 7th, the Sugathadasa Indoor and Outdoor Stadium in Colombo buzzed with activity. Over 3,500 international delegates gathered, joining hands with an estimated 10,000 local brothers and sisters for a joyous assembly. This massive undertaking demonstrated the country’s impressive infrastructure and the amazing support provided by local authorities to ensure a seamless, successful, and joyous visit for all.

The international flavour of the event was truly remarkable. Delegates travelled from ten countries, strengthening global bonds of fellowship: the USA, Japan, the Czech Republic (Tzech republic), Greece, Cyprus, the Caribbean, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, the Philippines, and India.

Beyond the Convention: Experiencing the 'Pearl of the Indian Ocean

What made this event truly special was the opportunity for the international visitors to experience a taste of Sri Lanka's breathtaking wonders. The extended trips for the foreign delegates were a highlight, showcasing the island's diversity from coast to hill country.

The Call of the Wild: An Elephant Encounter

A deeply moving experience for many was the trip to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. The delegates got up close with the gentle giants, with the chance to hand-feed the baby elephants—an interaction that brought smiles to every face. A true spectacle followed as they watched the majestic herd trundle through the town streets on their way to the river for a communal wash.

Taste of the South: Cinnamon and Turtles

The delegates journeyed to the southern coast for a fascinating Cinnamon and Turtle Tour. At a local cinnamon farm, they were treated to an incredibly informative and passionate explanation on how cinnamon—a spice famously mentioned in the Bible as a commodity that dates back to the time of Moses—is grown and processed into sticks, oils, and teas. The tour concluded at a turtle hatchery, where the unforgettable opportunity to gently handle week-old baby turtles, and some older juveniles, was a profound moment for many.

From Highlands to History: Tea and Galle

The contrast of the landscape was on full display during the Galle and Tea Tour. Visitors travelled to a low-grown tea plantation and factory to discover the meticulous process that transforms the humble leaf into one of the world's most popular beverages. This was followed by a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage walled city of Galle. Wandering through this incredible ancient city, with its stunning colonial-era buildings and historic Arab trader houses, was a step back in time.

Colombo's Rich Past: A City Tour

The Colombo City Tour provided a deep dive into Sri Lanka's rich history. The narrative of trade, with connections to the Middle East and Europe, was brought to life, including the legend that King Solomon traded with the island and gifted the Queen of Sheba a sapphire sourced from Sri Lanka. The tour also had a special significance for the delegates, as it included sites where early prominent figures of Jehovah's Witnesses, like Charles Taze Russell and Brother Knorr, had given speeches.

Lasting Memories and Future Plans

For many of the visiting friends, their stay extended well beyond the convention days. They explored the island further, taking in the incredible misty mountains and their numerous waterfalls, thrilling whale-watching excursions, visits to sparkling gem mines, and safaris through national parks teeming with wildlife—from leopards and crocodiles to sloth bears and, of course, countless more elephants. The pristine beaches offered a perfect conclusion to their island adventure.

The impeccable organisation of such a massive event, coupled with the exemplary conduct of the visitors, cemented Sri Lanka's reputation as a world-class destination for major international gatherings. The heartfelt hospitality from the local community left a powerful impression, and many delegates are already planning to revisit the island with their families, ensuring that the bonds of friendship formed in September 2025 will continue to strengthen Sri Lanka's ties with the world.

It was, by all accounts, a truly joyous and unforgettable visit!
